The Healing Wisdom of Maya Abdominal Massage
We are happy to introduce a new modality that Stillwater is offering: Maya Abdominal Therapy, also known as Maya Abdominal Massage. This unique form of abdominal massage nourishes and supports the center of the body by targeting the spaces between the diaphragm and the base of the pelvis, including the abdomen, low back, hips, and pelvis.
Because this modality works with the core of the individual, a potent place where healing can begin, the very definition of the word core itself hints at this: “the central, innermost, or most essential part of anything.”
“The closer you come to your core, the greater is your joy.”
What Is Maya Abdominal Therapy?
As a specialized form of abdominal massage therapy, Maya Abdominal Massage focuses not only on the abdomen but also on the hips, pelvis, low back, and sacrum.
To begin, touch is guided by intentionality and sensitivity to the nervous system. Starting on the belly, we work slowly, systematically, and thoroughly, helping to gradually release restrictions and access the deeper tissue layers.
Next, we then move to the back body, focusing on the lower back, pelvis, and tailbone (sacrum). Softening the tissues and ligaments in this area leads to a realignment of the area, encouraging proper positioning of the reproductive and abdominal organs, hips, and pelvis. This treatment enhances the body's ability to move blood and lymph, clears blockages and imbalances so that the nerves are able to communicate without restriction. Old patterns held in the tissues can gradually be released to shift into healthier patterns.
Additionally, Maya Abdominal Therapy is a uniquely useful modality for working with any type of chronic low back issue because of its focus on releasing tension in the core and base of the spine.
Just as importantly, this modality acknowledges the whole being, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The belly is not only the physical core but also the home of our emotional selves. Think about how we get ‘butterflies’ in our stomachs when we are nervous or how our ‘gut’ clenches to get our attention when something doesn’t feel right. Maya Abdominal therapy recognizes this connection and holds space for the softening of stress and tension. This can lead to a sense of relief and a feeling of being grounded.

Fertility Massage Benefits
One of the most celebrated aspects of Maya Abdominal Massage is its role in supporting reproductive health. In fact, many women seek out Maya Abdominal Massage for its fertility massage benefits. By improving blood flow to the pelvic area and encouraging proper alignment of the uterus, this therapy can help to create an optimal environment for conception.
Depending on the circumstances, it can be helpful for both parents to participate in this form of care in preparation for conception. For best results, plan on at least three sessions.
Also, this modality continues to be supportive through the prenatal and postpartum periods, potentially contributing to an easier labor, smoother delivery, and more balanced recovery.
Digestive and Pelvic Wellness
Equally important, Maya Abdominal Therapy supports the digestive system. Treatments can reduce abdominal congestion, improve elimination, and restore proper circulation to the gut. For those experiencing bloating, sluggish digestion, heartburn, or abdominal tension, this therapy has been proven to offer a natural, effective, and non-invasive path to relief.
Additionally, it is well known for its ability to relieve a host of pelvic issues, including menstrual discomfort, endometriosis, urinary incontinence, organ prolapse, prostate problems, and pelvic pain.
Because the abdomen is closely tied to emotional well-being, many clients report feeling lighter, calmer, more clear-headed, and connected after a session. It is not uncommon to experience a release of emotions, leaving space for clarity and renewal.
Ancient Roots, Modern Practice
The foundation of this practice stems from a long line of traditional healers and teachers that have spanned generations. For thousands of years, the Maya healing system, on which this practice is based, looked at the ailments of the body as a whole. It addressed the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects together.
The contemporary translation of this work comes to us through the work of Dr Rosita Arvigo, who was originally trained in the US as a Naprapathic doctor who blended ancient Maya techniques with modern anatomy and holistic health to create what we now know as The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy. She acknowledges and credits the many years she spent training with multiple healers in Belize, by honoring the influence of their cultures and lands as well as her most influential teachers: Don Elijio Panti, Miss Hortense Robinson, Miss Juana Xix, and Mexican midwife Dona Maria Torres.
Thanks to this lineage, the practice is now available worldwide, blending ancient techniques with a contemporary understanding of anatomy and holistic health.
